Hey Reader,
Can I be honest? Holiday grocery shopping used to stress me out. 😅 Between hosting dinners, baking treats, and stocking up for holiday house guests, my grocery bill seemed to skyrocket every year. And don’t even get me started on impulse buys (fun shaped butter always gets me- don't we all love the Christmas tree shaped butter?).
But a few years ago, I decided enough was enough. I wasn’t going to let holiday food shopping derail my budget. After some trial and error, I figured out how to save money and still create meals and memories my family loves.
Here are my top tips for saving on groceries during the holidays:
1️⃣ Plan Ahead: Make a meal plan for every holiday event you’re hosting or contributing to, and stick to it. Bonus tip: Build meals around ingredients you already have in your pantry to save even more.
2️⃣ Shop Smart for Baking: Holiday baking can add up quickly. Check your local grocery ads for sales on flour, sugar, butter, and spices—and stock up when the prices are low. You'll find that baking items are usually the cheapest during the holidays!
3️⃣ Go Potluck Style: Hosting? Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family to bring a dish. Sharing the cooking (and the cost) makes the holidays more affordable for everyone.
4️⃣ Embrace Store Brands: You’d be surprised how much you can save by swapping name brands for store brands—especially on pantry staples.
5️⃣ Don’t Overbuy: I’ve learned the hard way that leftovers are great, but not when you’re tossing half of them in the trash. Estimate portions carefully to save money and reduce food waste.
By being intentional with my holiday grocery shopping, I’ve saved hundreds of dollars over the years—without sacrificing the things that matter most.
